Surf or turf ?

I love fantasising about where I'll go when I finally stop work. Beach or mountains...

For $299,950, I can get this 2 bedroom apartment in Toukley, about an hour from Sydney.

Main bedroom has an ensuite (incontinence problems with old age... nice!), walk in robe, kitchen with stone benches (after I get motivated from watching too many cooking shows) and a pool....

or

For  $250,000, I can get over 6 acres of gently sloping land with escarpment views in Little Hartley, two hours from Sydney.

I can build my eco-lodge, there's power and phone (read Internet!)

Blackberry Help 4: Keepass

Number 4 in this series of Blackberry How To**

Running an old Blackberry 8310 v4.5 and you have great difficulty remembering all your passwords. You can't go past the the Password Keeper that comes with the handset. If you're using this handy application, you can and should do a regular backup.

But, what happens if your handset dies, can you read the backup file on the PC?
Nope!! There is nothing that will permit you to read the data backed up in the Password Keeper.

However if you have Keepass, you have a database file that can be read on the handset as well as on the PC.

Problem is compatibility. You need:

Keepass 1.23 for your PC and Keepass BB 1.2.1528 for the Blackberry.

Customised training software

Hate presenting training courses at work. Staff get bored, I get annoyed by the sounds of ZZZZZZZ or BOOS!

Occurred to me that with the myriad of software available from Microsoft, there must be some way to devise a course, stick it on the intranet or shared public folder and get everyone to complete it. On completion, the "App" must be able to generate an email to HR informing that this staff has successfully completed the (boring) course.

Well, there is a way and Powerpoint is the answer. It's  a great piece of software. Some pointers are:

(1) The presentation must be saved as a Microsoft PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Presentation (.pptm). This is the 'master' where you write your presentation and test quiz.

(2) When it's ready it must be saved as a Microsoft PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Slide Show (.ppsm). This is the 'show' users click on.

(3) You'll want to disable the [Page Down] and other keys so users don't cheat, racing (or Page Downing ?? is this a word) to the end. They can only move from slide to slide via the buttons (hyperlinks) you build in. To do this you set the presentation to Kiosk Mode. Side Show -> Set Up the Slide Show -> Browsed at a kiosk (full screen), then save as (2) above.

(4) To get the presentation to send a confirmation email, add a button on the last slide to close the presentation and generate the email. The VBA code when the button is clicked:

Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()

Dim olApp As Object, olMail As Object
Set olApp = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")
Set olMail = olApp.CreateItem(0)
olMail.To = "someone@hroffice.com.au"
olMail.Subject = "Completed ...blah...blah... Course"
olMail.Body = "Yay!! Finished"

olMail.display
Application.Quit

End Sub

(5) To add a multiple choice quiz, the correct answer takes you to the next question via a hyperlink, an incorrect choice takes you to an error screen with a hyperlink button which take you back to the incorrect question.

Upstairs & Downstairs

Years ago before Downton, there was this TV series called Upstairs, Downstairs. It was about the lives of the servants who lived downstairs and their masters who resided upstairs.

I've got something similar at my place, me downstairs and the 'Family' of possums in the roof space. How they got there, I'll never know. Pretty sure all the gaps in the rafters have been sealed. What makes me think it's a 'Family'? Was ecstatic this weekend after I caught one, thinking it's the end but alas no, I can still hear the pitter-patter of little feet...

If...

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Weird question, it's kinda like if I can't brag or post photos online, did I really do it? Isn't it funny that I'm more concerned about taking photos for sharing rather than savouring the atmosphere and feeling the vibe....

The curse of social media I say!

Blackberry Help 3: Email without Blackberry service

Number 3 in this series of Blackberry How To**

What happens when you have a normal SIM with data but NO Blackberry Service (BIS or BES). You want email and a workable browser? The answer is to install Opera Mini and LogicMail.

The Blackberry browser won't work and Messages will not pick up your email.

Opera Mini is a great little browser running on WAP or the slow GPRS connection. It's small and fast. Prefer version 4. Download Opera Mini 4.4.3 here.

LogicMail is an excellent standalone email client designed providing full support for IMAP, POP, and SMTP over WAP and the slow GPRS. Download LogicMail 2.0.0 here.

How much ???

Three quarters of a million?? US$780,000??? Catarina Migliorini auctioned her virginity as part of a doco.

Yea right... we're all idiots!

To end the week on a nice note, its great to see father and son share some quality time together.

This photo’s worth a 1,000 words. Not so much the backdrop (which is pretty) but the two individuals. Rupert, founder, chair and CEO of News Corporation and Lachlan his eldest boy who quit daddy’s business a few years ago…

The Garden of Love

by William Blake 1757 – 1827

I laid me down upon a bank,
Where Love lay sleeping;
I heard among the rushes dank
Weeping, weeping.

Then I went to the heath and the wild,
To the thistles and thorns of the waste;
And they told me how they were beguiled,
Driven out, and compelled to the chaste.

I went to the Garden of Love,
And saw what I never had seen;
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut
And "Thou shalt not," writ over the door;
So I turned to the Garden of Love
That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves,
And tombstones where flowers should be;
And priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars my joys and desires.

A little creepy

... but in the world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.
~ Benjamin Franklin

Ben was a bright guy right? If that's what he believed in, it's got be a dead certainty. Armed with that knowledge, asked myself, how can I make some money.

Offer tax avoidance advice? Considered too risky.

Buy a morgue? Yuck.

Invest in death? Yes!!!

This is when I discovered a little company called InvoCare. It was little, has grown quite a bit to be Asia-Pacific's largest private funeral, cemetery and crematorium operator. Ben was right after all...

And guess what, if Domino's can do it, InvoCare is going online. Relatives can design 'the event' and preview it online. They've even invested in HeavenAddress an online memorial that gets a million hits every year.

Maybe I'll go invest my allowance....

NB: This Blog does not constitute a recommendation or advice to purchase any investment, product or service listed or mentioned.

I've got a problem...

Serious reservations about the do-gooders that inhabit my world. So often these people who no doubt mean well, have never really suffered, don't know what poverty is, never experienced hunger, nor countries where parents will sell their child into slavery for food.

They tend to congregate around the inner-city, pay more for green energy and love exerting their version of social justice on any issue that grabs their fancy.

Let's take Gunns, a forestry company in Tassie, founded in 1875 and employing over 1,200 people. Anti-logging and Green pressure resulted in the appointment of an administrator this week. What about the 1,200 now unemployed?

Another case is Sherrin footballs who use Indian child labour to hand stitch footballs for 12 cents per hour. Sherrin stopped outsourcing work to these families. Unfortunately, this was their only source of income. Is prostitution a better alternative?

There's no easy answer, saving the environment is a worthwhile objective, eradicating child labour, the right thing to do, but those affected never have a say.

PS... a must read this article in the Daily Mail.

Faith?

Sometime ago, I went to this quaint trendy church in inner Sydney, one where they still celebrate mass in Latin. The air was thick with incense, congregation starts off chanting the Asperges; during the service, we (yes we!) sing the Kyrie and the choir then joins in with some Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony.   Oh...  and the priests face the altar, not the congregation.

Note the position of the altar

But I digress.... on November 1, All Saints Day, this Church brings out all their relics and display them on the altar. What relics you may ask? Bone fragments of the twelve Apostles, veil of Mary, splinter from the cross Jesus was crucified on and many, many more. I was shocked (and awed !).

Do such things exist? Well, the Crown of Thorns can be found at Notre Dame

The Catholic Church keeps bits and pieces of many saints. Once in a while, the Vatican doles out a piece, encased in a monstrance or case, to churches, bishops and priests worldwide. These bits can be 1st class relics, bone, flesh or hair, second class, an item used by the saint or third class, something touched to a first or second class relic.

Monstrance with the bone fragment of each Apostle
Note: I held this!

What happens when a bishop dies, a parish church closes or broken into? Personal possessions of the bishop can be sold and many land up on eBay.

Yes, I've bought a splinter of the True Cross. Call me an idiot, gullible, whatever. But then, it's all about faith eh?

Climate change and politics

Always thought global warming was that- GLOBAL. Not just an Aussie problem but EVERYONE'S.

But according to the the Climate Change Commission (established by our Green Government to provide all Australians with an independent and reliable source of information about the science of climate change), they state that:
  •  Australia is the largest emitter per person of any country in the developed world.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions
  • Australia belongs to a group of 20 carbon heavyweights – 20 countries that contribute 75 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions

Yea, right, f***** political mouthpiece, much like saying how well we did to win all those gold medals at the Olympics... (per capita that is).

Sammy!

This lady's been making waves recently, no doubt annoying a whole lot of women around the globe. Yup, I referring to the one and only Samantha Brick!

A columnist with the Daily Mail, writer of "Why women hate me for being beautiful." and "I describe myself as a trophy wife."

You might think of her an insecure and incapable 'poppet' (her words, not mine), but there was a time when Sam was a high flier, TV producer and production company owner (read more here).

I honestly think it's an act, she's not daft and it's TRUE, pleasant woman bosses are an exception! This is from personal experience. Sam talks about hormones, bitchiness and emotion, I could add chip on the shoulder and something to prove (hence those power shoulder pads).

The other reason for her statements, it's all about publicity and online clout (or klout!), where one gets invites or job offers based on ones' Klout score.

Silly huh?

Canticle of Creation

Could only find the instrumental version of this song. Courtesy of http://www.sixmaddens.org/

Verse 1.
As night gives birth to the dawn
And I see all the grandeur of each day.
I long to have and to hold, all the wonder of your heart,
All the power in your love, all the mystery embodied in your word.

Chorus
Spirit breathe your breath of love!
Creation yearns for you to come.
Renew your earth, outpour your healing care.
Lord restore the harmony where humankind may learn to see
The hope, the dream, in your almighty plan.

Verse 2.
The earth is blessed and adorned
By the breath and presence of your love.
All those who dwell in this land – shall awaken to your voice,
They shall stand to give you praise, and your faithfulness will reign for evermore.

Chorus 2
Spirit breathe your breath of love!
Creation yearns for you to come.
Renew your earth, outpour your healing care.
Lord restore the harmony where humankind may learn to see
The hope to dream again in Your almighty plan.

Repeat Chorus 2

Am I a real bloke?

Am I a real bloke? A man's man? I ask because I've just opened a Pinterest account.

Truth be told, I'm old and lazy and Pinterest is ideal for memory deficient, couch potatoes. If I come across anything that grabs my fancy be it Jennifer Hawkins or some home remedy, I just "Pin It" and it's noted for posterity.

Problem is, there's no privacy settings so if I do pin any dirty pics, it's there for all to see. Kinda tricky when 80% of Pinterest users are women.

Lashings of abuse... oh yea!

Fame and the God Particle

Picture this, three sub-atomic particles walking down the street, Nicole, George and Werther. No mass, no fame.

Suddenly a pack of paparazzi appear, and surround Nicole and George, slowing them down, bunching them together.

The paparazzi form a (Higgs) field round George and Nicole. Roughs them up a little. Nicole and George, they find themselves suddenly famous (and mass-ful). The pair are no longer sub-atomic, but become atomic! They have mass!

One of the paparazzi flashes his camera, his tool of trade. This camera is the God (Higgs) Particle, the small tool that can elevate mere-sub-atomics to the god-like-atomic level in a field of paparazzi.

Makes sense?

Meanwhile, Werther continues down the road, blissfully unaware... an unknown and mass-less.

Weekend again!

Well, it's Friday again.

Quite a curious mix this office. The IT guy came round collecting for the Euro 2012 office sweep (no NRL nor AFL here) followed by afternoon tea comprising nibblies, sushi and Taylor's Promised Land Unwooded Chardonnay. The excuse was to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. O oook..... whatever.

Going to spend the weekend powerpointing (sounds a lot more interesting than working) and maybe property hunting. The O'Farrell NSW government has kindly offered first home buyers $15,000 and no stamp duty on off-the-plan purchases. Only way to get the kid out the home...help them buy their own place...

My Castle Fantasy... Part 2

In October 2011, I wrote about my fantasy, buying this 40 acre plot of land in Cambewarra, the asking price $395,000.

Well, it's still for sale, now asking $299,000. Talk about financial crisis. Funny thing, the two properties up and down the road are asking $1.275m and $749,000.

TGIF

Yup, thank god it's Friday and it's a long weekend too. Queen's birthday Monday, 11 June! God bless the Queen I say, no matter what the republicans believe in.

What a week!

1. We have a bunch of Greeks fiddling (or fighting) while Athens burn. Global financial calamity but who cares? Not the Greeks.

Ilias Kasidiaris of the Golden Dawn party throwing water at the left-wing
Syriza party member and then smacking the Communist Party member in the face.

2. Next up, we find some ladies stabbing each other over a pair of shoes. Mid season sale is now on at all department stalls.

Men, important point from this, never stand between a lady and shoes on sale!

Two girls are in hospital after stabbing each other in a tussle over shoes at the
Gold Coast's Robina Town Centre.

3. Finally, the pride of Aussie swimmers. Nick D'Arcy (the one on the left, punched fellow swimmer, Simon Cowley breaking his nose, was ordered to pay $181,000 in damages, but declared bankruptcy) and Kenrick Monk who claimed he was the victim of a hit and run when he actually fell off his skateboard.

One afternoon...

Don't normally wander out at lunch time but with a stuffed up and sniffling nose thought an afternoon stroll may help.

Noticed many more homeless on the streets and closing down sales on every corner. There are exceptions, the  Louis Vuitton, the three story Apple store and Burberrys seems to be doing ok. The $15 barber with the well thumbed copies of RALPH is positively thriving. Maybe it's because the old gents that run the place have been replaced by lovely Japanese ladies....

I'm not a scrooge, I did leave a tip after my haircut!

Confusing??

Jenna Talackova (Miss Canada) Andrej Pejic (as Miss Australia)

As if life's not tricky enough, discovered that Miss Universe now allows "non-women" to compete. I guess it's nothing too extraordinary as Miss Tiffany's Universe transsexual beauty pageant has been around for quite while. If I were Goldman Sachs, would be recommending a merger, imagine the synergies.

So this year, Canada's offered up Jenna Talackova, and to go one better, we're going to put forward our own Andrej Pejic for Miss Universe 2012.

Starkers Bonkers

Nude's becoming the new black.

We have nude as a colour, we have nude beaches, we have Spencer Tunick encouraging crowds to shed their clothing for a photoshoot.

I'm 365 from left on the 15th row...

We now have nude museum tours.

Melbourne artist, Stuart Ringholt will be exihibiting his "exhibition" at the Museum of Contemporary Arts. Wasn't there a nude dinner craze recently in Melbourne?

Crazy Melbournens! Guess if you enjoy a perv, we can make a museum date for April ;)

Blackberry Help 2: Mobiola xPlayer and Contact Sync

Number 2 in this series of Blackberry How To**

What happens when your:
  1. Mobiola xPlayer won't play (it keeps asking for permissions and looping); and
  2. Blackberry Calendar will not do a desktop synchronise with Microsoft Outlook. Other things like tasks, contacts and memo syncs fine.

Instead of wasting hours fiddling with the settings, Googling or posting to Blackberry forums, one can do a complete wipe.
  1. Backup your data.
  2. Options → Security Options → General Settings → Menu → select Wipe Handheld
  3. Once complete choose from restore the backup done in (1)
  4. Do not restore everything, especially not the permissions and the like. "Contact, Calendar, Task, Calls, SMS, Email Data" is fine.
  5. Sync from your desktop should work.
  6. Download this version of Mobiola xPlayer 1.7.1 and install.

Chinese New Year

Today's Chinese New Year or the first day of the Spring Festival, end of winter! I'm sure many would dispute that. For us upside downers, it means the end of summer and beginning of autumn. Not much of a summer, I'm quite sure it's the end of the world.

Anyway, a happy and prosperous Dragon New Year to all. Year of the dragon, the blurb goes:

Lucky gemstone: Opal, sapphire and amber
Lucky colours: Gold and black
Most compatible signs for Dragons: Rat, Snake, Monkey and Rooster
Most incompatible signs for Dragons: Dog... too bad if you're 18, 30, 42 or 54 :(
